The NSO tests its theoretical research on building prototypes. The initial project was to develop a proposal by the students of Cecil Balmond's Research Studio for the Rotunda at The University of Pennsylvania in the summer of 2004. Theoretical principles of algorithmic proliferation was tested as a novel construction technique.

Upcoming in 2008-2009 will be a series of fabrication prototypes for the current sponsored research, "Nonlinear Fabrication."

In addition to prototyping projects, NSO also participates in collaborative initiatives for exhibitions and conferences that extend and test its research program. Past projects have included collaborations with ARUP AGU, The Slought Foundation, and The Esther Klein Gallery through Sabin/Jones LabSTUDIO.
