The sponsored research is the core of the NSO’s program of research. Two research proposals were submitted in 2005. The first is by Aranda/Lasch and Daniel Bosia (ARUP) and looks at quasi-crystals as a possible principle of modular organization. The second is by Philip Ording, a mathematician studying topological principles. The proposal is for the development of a novel technique for graphing topological relationships in knot formations.

In 2007, two additional proposals were accepted. The first is by Jenny Sabin (PennDesign) and Peter Lloyd Jones (Institute for Medicine and Engineering) and applies parametric modeling techniques (Generative Components Software by Bentley Systems) to human cellular organizations for diagnostic and therapeutic applications. The second is by Ferda Kolatan (SU11) and develops a methodology for incorporating virtual, information based modules for the design of building components.
