The NSO hosts annual conferences bringing together architects, engineers, scientific researchers, and cultural theorists to formulate and evaluate transdisciplinary design projects. The conference is conducted over two days, following a format of lectures and panel discussions. Each year focuses on a specific thematic problem.

The first conference, “Workshops in Irreducible Complexity, Next Steps for Architecture and Science,” was the launch event for the NSO. The conference laid the groundwork for the NSO’s program of research and established its research network.

The second conference, “Architecture Bits, Building in Architecture, Biology, and Computation,” focused attention on the most promising transdisciplinary project from the first year of research, concretizing a collaboration between the department of architecture, the Institute for Medicine and Engineering (IME), and Bentley Systems.

This year’s conference, “Nonlinear Fabrication, Strange Loops in the Products Lifecycle,” evaluates the current funded research project, "Nonlinear Fabrication" and looks to develop a new trajectory for digital fabrication in architectural design.
